Curriculum

Curriculum at Highfields Academy

At Highfields Academy, our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with meaningful, enriching experiences that prepare them for life in the modern world. Grounded in the National Curriculum, it is shaped by our core values: Respect, Resilience, Responsibility, Roundedness, and being Rewarded. These values drive our approach to teaching and learning, ensuring that each child is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and character needed to thrive.

Our curriculum is tailored to reflect the needs of every child in our school community. A strong emphasis is placed on fluency in the fundamental skills of reading, writing and mathematics, as these form the foundation for lifelong learning. Through a carefully planned and broad curriculum, pupils gain a balanced understanding of the world, recognising their role in it and learning from the past and present. This approach fosters critical thinking and prepares children to shape the future with confidence and purpose.

Highfields’ values underpin all aspects of our curriculum. Our goal is to nurture confident, articulate, and passionate young people who aspire to make a positive impact on the world. We emphasise understanding each individual’s role within the local community and the wider world.

Our curriculum promotes acceptance and appreciation of diversity, helping pupils develop empathy and a global perspective.

Early identification of learning challenges is key. We implement targeted support to ensure that all pupils can access the curriculum and achieve their full potential. Alongside this, we actively teach and model fundamental British values alongside our school values. This focus ensures pupils understand and demonstrate these values through their actions and behaviors.

Learning is carefully sequenced to build on prior knowledge and experiences, ensuring that pupils retain and apply what they have learned as they progress. Beyond the classroom, our curriculum includes opportunities for enrichment, such as extracurricular activities, trips, and residential visits. These experiences deepen learning and create lasting memories.

Our curriculum prioritizes personal growth, helping pupils understand how to lead happy, healthy lives. This focus extends to developing resilience, self-awareness, and a sense of responsibility.

Our Vision for Highfields Academy Pupils
By the time they leave Highfields Academy, our pupils will be confident, capable, and passionate individuals ready to contribute positively to society. They will be equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values to effect meaningful change in the world.
