Curriculum
At Highfields Academy, we strive to ensure that our curriculum provides our pupils with meaningful experiences and prepares them for life in the modern-day world. Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and is also built around our core values: Respect, Resilient, Responsible, Rounded and Rewarded.
The curriculum has been developed to ensure that its content closely matches the needs of all children in our school. We want to ensure that our learners are fluent in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Through a well-planned, broad curriculum, children will gain a balanced view of the world around them and their own importance in this, understanding of the events of the past and present, as well developing skills and knowledge that will shape their future. In addition to our core values our aim is that all pupils will leave Highfields as confident, articulate and passionate young people, who will want to make a difference to our world and be equipped to change it for the better.
The principles that underpin our curriculum:
- Understanding our place in the local community and in the wider world
- Awareness, acceptance and appreciation of diversity
- The fundamental skills of Reading, Writing and Mathematics
- Early identification of barriers to learning and effective support
- School values and British Values: actions and behaviours, not only words.
- Opportunities and memorable experiences, including extra-curricular activities, trips and residential visits.
- A sequential curriculum that ensures that new learning effectively builds on prior learning and experiences, enabling knowledge and skills to become embedded.
- Personal development: developing pupils’ personal growth and their understanding of how to be happy and healthy.
