MFL - Spanish

Pupils in KS2 at Highfields will continue learning Spanish this year and learning about Spanish speaking countries around the world. The children worked very well last year and I will hopefully be passing on some more of my enthusiasm for learning languages to them as we progress.

For the European Day of Languages this year we will be learning about the importance of some of the foreign languages around us and will try to learn a few words from some languages that we don't usually study.  The theme for this year is "Thank you for the Earth" so we will discuss things that are important to ourselves and others and will also be working on producing some beautiful new work to display around school.

Year 6 will have new penfriends in Spain this year and we will look forward to practising our writing skills and exchanging some introductory letters with them.  We will be sending Christmas cards to our penfriends and hopefully have a few Zoom calls with Spain, so that the children can meet their penfriends 'face to face.'  This is something that children really enjoyed last year, putting their knowledge into practice as we played games like Bingo and "Guess the Fruit".

If you are interested in learning Spanish or other foreign languages with your child at home, the BBC has lots of fantastic resources, including stories, songs and games on their website. Here is the link: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/z39d7ty  If you would like further information or resources in Spanish please let me know and I will try to help.

Please see the links below for new long term planning documents for each year group. These set out in detail what your child will be learning in their foreign language classes this year.  Each half term has a topic area of study and within that we will be learning and progressing with new vocabulary, phonics and grammar, increasing the children's knowledge and confidence in trying out their language skills.
